BTN estimates global pharmaceutical giant spent $30 million in U.S.-originating airfares in 2023. The company grew total revenue by more than 20 percent in 2023 to reach more than 34 billion. Lilly employed 43,000 people at year-end.
The company has a plan to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, but it just began measuring Scope 3, with the relevant business travel category, on 2023 travel activities. The process determined that business travel’s 45,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions amounted to less than 1 percent of the company’s overall Scope 3 footprint.
Lilly’s 2023 Sustainability Report did not specify whether actions were being taken to reduce business travel emissions specifically. The report did state, however, that the company has “begun to engage with key suppliers and identify areas of our value chain where we could potentially drive emissions reductions.”
