Google’s U.S.-booked air volume continued its upward trajectory in 2023 to reach $186 million, up from $151 million in the previous year. Around 60 percent of Google’s business travel activity is for internal purposes, with the company increasing T&E budgets in 2024 to enable more face-to-face engagement. It appointed American Express Global Business Travel as its sole global TMC in 2020 but only 50 percent of globally booked air volumes went through the agency in 2023, with the balance booked via “open” channels.
In 2024, the company is aspiring to deliver an improved user journey and a simple, interconnected process across booking, payment and reimbursement.
According to its latest sustainability report, Google’s total emissions in 2023 amounted to 14.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Of those, business travel accounted for 283,000 CO2e (up from 211,000 MT CO2e in 2022)—representing about 2 percent of the company’s total. Business travel emissions include emissions from air, rail, car rental and rideshare, with distance-, fuel- and spend-based travel data collected through its online booking system and through a third-party travel agency.
In 2023, Google joined the ‘Avelia’ sustainable aviation fuel program created by Accenture, American Express GBT and Shell, which offers SAF credits to corporate customers via a “book-and-claim” platform. Additionally, in 2024, Google joined the United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund, which focuses on sustainable aviation fuel research, technology and production.
Google parent Alphabet reported consolidated 2023 revenue of $307.4 billion, a 9 percent increase from the previous year. At year end 2023, the company had 182,502 employees after reducing its global workforce by 6 percent (or some 12,000 jobs) earlier in the year.
