IBM made progress in travel program consolidation, duty of care and sustainability management in 2023. The technology company implemented a Visa corporate card program issued by Citibank to 96,000 employees across 65 countries.
It also became the launch customer for an American Express Global Business Travel helpdesk for travelers requiring special assistance. The helpdesk offers booking and on-trip support to IBM employees not only with mobility challenges but also with auditory, visual and neurodivergence needs.
Meanwhile, IBM expanded its rental of electric vehicles from Hertz and Avis, an initiative launched in 2022. EVs accounted for 15 percent of vehicles rented by IBM US In the final quarter of 2023. The company communicates internally on how to drive and charge EVs.
In its 2023 Impact Report, IBM cited the transition to EV rental along with greater use of online collaboration tools as two key measures to manage its business travel emissions. Reported greenhouse gas emissions from business travel (air and car rental) in 2023 were 117,000 metric tons, versus 393,000 metric tons in 2019. The company expects to reach pre-pandemic business travel levels within the next couple of years.
IBM and its wholly owned subsidiaries had 291,000 full-time employees in 2023, when revenue rose 3 percent year over year to $62 billion.
