Microsoft has expanded its purchase of alternative jet fuel. In 2023, it followed a “large-scale” purchase from British Airways and Iberia owner International Airlines Group with the announcement in October of a 10-year contract with World Energy to purchase sustainable aviation fuel certificates as part of its decarbonization efforts. Microsoft claimed the deal would reduce 469,000 metric tons of CO2 from corporate air travel through World Energy supplying 43.7 million gallons of SAF to airlines.
Microsoft announced another agreement in January 2024 to purchase SAF certificates using a verifiable book-and-claim process from OMV of Austria, a producer of alternative fuels from used cooking oil.
Microsoft’s greenhouse gas emissions caused by business travel were 133,000 metric tons in its 2023 fiscal year (running to June 30, 2023), down from 139,000 metric tons in fiscal year 2022. Business travel accounted for 0.8 percent of the company’s Scope 3 emissions.
