Global financial institution The World Bank closed up pandemic-related service-level shortfalls at its travel management company in 2023.
The bank implemented a return-to-office program and moved closer to pre-pandemic travel patterns: It totaled $145.7 million in its U.S.-booked air volume in 2023—up more than 50 percent from $96.6 million in 2022.
Online booking adoption in the U.S. increased in 2023 but at 15 percent remained low overall compared to other CT100 organizations. That’s not unusual for an institution often operating outside of major business markets and, therefore, requiring complex travel to international locales.
About two-thirds of The World Bank’s bookings are handled through American Express Global Business Travel, one-third with BCD Travel and a small percentage in India is handled by specialist agency SOTC.
The bank in 2024 is working through a global air request for proposals as well as an RFP for charter air service. It went out to bid on a global travel management company RFP, but that contract excludes North America. The institution also is implementing Concur in India and Singapore this year.
